Events in February

Dear all,

Here are the events happening in February.

It is a very quiet month but with lots of preparations for Carnival on top of our normal fun learning.

1st – 3rd : continue with the parents’ meetings (I am very happy to have met most of you by now as we had very productive meetings)

9th – h.w will be given today due to the public holiday the next day.  Send both ‘SG’ and ‘D’ copybooks so we hold both spelling game and dettatura

10th – Public Holiday – no school

20th – bring both green and blue ‘s’ copybooks.  New words will be given for the English and the Malti spelling games due to our outing the next day.

21st – Finally!! Our visit to ESPLORA (on the day children will only need a small bag with lunch and drink, as well as their jackets).

23rd – h.w will be given due to carnival party the next day.  Also send in both ‘SG’ and ‘D’ copybooks so we can hold both spelling game and dettatura.

24th – Carnival party in class.  Children come to school dressed in their carnival costume or in casual clothes if they do not want to dress up in a costume (we’ll find them one in our dressing up section 🙂  Costume needs to be comfortable to stay in all day long and children be able to go to the bathroom unaided.  No swords, guns or any sharp object will be allowed.  Make-up and wigs are ok but no whole face masks.  Children will only need their drink.  I would like to start asking you parents to let me know what you would like to contribute (food items) for the Carnival party.  Please send me an email about what you’d like to send in.  We will accept a few dessert items 🙂

27 & 28th – Carnival holidays – no school

Hope you find this list useful to help you manage better.  Just a reminder about what days to send in what:

Mondays – Green ‘s’ copybook

Tuesdays – Blue ‘s’ copybook

Wednesdays- yellow folder with reading books

Thursdays – Green ‘SG’ copybook

Friday – Blue ‘D’ copybook

Spelling game and dettatura

Dear all,

Just to let you know that the Spelling Game scheduled for tomorrow and Dettatura scheduled for Friday will still be happening.

I would like to point out something about these games as some parents are apprehensive.

First of all do not look at these games as tests and therefore put unnecessary pressure on the children.  Secondly with the new methodology, the children are being immersed with the words in everything they do during the week – ground work, games, activities, creative work and booklets.  So apart from writing the words on the next two columns on the ‘s’ copybooks they do not need to do much more.  Yes the children will be asked to write these words from memory but not to test them but to guide them to listen to all sounds that form a word, to use all that they have been working with during the week.  Yes obviously not all the children will be able to do this right away but that is not the end of the world.  Week after week the children will get used to using the skills learnt so far and put them in practice.

Those who have older siblings know that in the upper grades these games are used more as a means of testing and than never used or rarely used again.  Our aim is for the children to learn these words in the proper way (not just learning them for the sake of scoring in the games) and then use them properly again when needed.  The reason we carry out the spelling games and dettatura at the end of the week and not the following week like they do in the upper grades is because 1. we want to link them with the sounds being covered during that week and not mix them up with a new sound, 2. as a means of conclusion of the sounds of the week.

I hope this eases up some minds which were thinking that the children needed to ‘study’ these words ad nauseum, or that these games were like tests.  If you still have any queries please do not hesitate to contact me.

Remember when the children bring home their copybooks, praise on their efforts – sounding the words properly, writing within the lines and not pick on the ones they get wrong.  At the bottom of the page you need to sign to show that you have seen the games and remember to return the copybook the following week on the designated days (SG on Thursday, D on Fridays).  Thanks for your co-operation.

Revision sheets

Dear all,

Today the children brought home (those who were not absent on Monday) 3 coloured sheets (2 for those who do not do Malti).

These show some revision we did in class. Mainly:

  • number ordering (before and after) up to 20
  • 2D shapes names
  • building of cvc words (3 letter words)
  • correct vowel sound
  • letter formation
  • biex tibda din? (beginning sound in Maltese)
  • Maltese vocabulary
  • Il-vokali (vowels in Maltese)

On each sheet I marked a star for concepts which the children managed to achieve, and a wish wand for areas the children need to work on.  Please have a look at these sheets and work on these areas over the holidays (you will have a Christmas pack to help you).  I need these sheets signed and placed in the children’s reference book at the back.

Many thanks.
